Levitation can be the first trick in your arsenal of magic to amaze your friends and family. If you’ve ever wanted to be able to perform tricks that no one can guess how to do, learning levitation is a great way to start. Although it seems complicated, levitation is actually fairly simple. It just requires a good deal of practice and the right props.
One of the first rules of magic is that the audience should be misdirected. It’s easy to get them to pay attention to something other than the trick that’s being performed. Most audiences want to believe in your “magic,” even if only a little. For the levitation that will be discussed here, the
“Superman” or Wild Levitation, the misdirection is done with a jacket or other cover to shield what’s really happening from view. What makes it work is a little acting and showmanship on your part.
Before you start this levitation, make sure that you attach your shoes together using a clip, hook and loop tape, magnets, or some other method. Since you’ll be holding a cover in front of your legs, you can usually accomplish this while “arranging” the cover. The hard part of this levitation is that you must learn to slip your foot out of one shoe without obviously moving your leg or foot. Shoes that are a little bit loose can help you do this, as can keeping up a patter and moving the cover at the same time as you’re slipping the foot out. Once you’ve managed to get your foot out of the shoe, slide it back behind the shoe without moving it. Then stand on the tips of your toes at the same time as you raise the other foot. You will appear to levitate. It’s important than no member of the audience be able to see you from the side or back – only the front. This is one way that you control the audience’s attention.
This levitation trick is more complicated than some of the others, like the classic Balducci levitation, and takes some practice at home before showing it off. However, it has the advantage of allowing you to appear to rise much further off of the ground. The cover makes this levitation a little less natural than some of the other methods, but it is required to prevent your foot from showing behind the shoe.
With enough practice, you’ll be able to pull off this levitation trick seamlessly. Amaze your friends and family by learning to levitate. Soon, you’ll probably want to learn other tricks, too. Levitation can be a great way to begin performing magic in front of an audience. Since it takes few props, levitation can easily be performed by an amateur. All you have to do is practice until you can do the motions seamlessly. If you’ve ever wanted to learn to do magic, try this levitation trick.
